Below are several law essay topics for you to choose. Your task is to choose one topic and do research in order to write your essay.
Topic 1: A young Chinese national is the primary suspect in the murder of another Chinese national in Canada. The suspect has left Canada at a time when police only had insufficient evidence and no grounds to hold the young suspect in Canada by requiring he relinquish his passport. The Canadian government has asked the government of the People's Republic of China to extradite the suspect so that a trial can be initiated. The Chinese government has, thus far, stalled. There are suggestions that another Chinese national, who has been charged with crimes in China and who has sought refuge in Canada could be exchanged for the Chinese national who has escaped to China from Canadian authorities. The Canadian government has so far stalled and denied China's request to send this criminal back because there are strong chances that this second criminal would face the death penalty in China.
Discuss solutions to this problem.
Topic 2: In the past, men who drank and drove often received only minor sentences or simply a "slap on the wrist" by lenient judges. The attitude of most Canadians has changed considerably over the last few years as a result of lobbying efforts by such organizations as MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
Research how the attitude of Canadians with respect to drinking and driving has changed and why and try to apply the process of change that you might discover to other changes in law.
Topic 3: Our Canadian Constitution incorporates the all important Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The main purpose of this charter is to protect individual Canadians from government wrong-doings in the form of legislation that attempts, directly or indirectly, to take away rights of Canadians that are guaranteed in the Constitution.
At times, immigrants from diverse countries bring customs and practices to Canada that are protected under the "Religious Freedoms" section of the Charter of Rights. At the same time, laws exist in Canada to prohibit certain behaviours such as polygamy.
Discuss how restrictive laws succh as polygamy laws and religious freedoms can be reconciled.
